Albert Ball (left) with Wilbourn Robinson (center), Jessie Palmer (right) and a dog. Albert, Jesse, and Wilbur were close friends from early childhood who joined the Marines together in June 1917. Albert and Jesse were assigned to the same unit, the Sixth Regiment, First Battalion, United States Marine Corps, while Wilbourn was separated from his chums and assigned to a different unit. Albert and Jesse trained together and then fought alongside each other in France until Albert was wounded in action at the Belleau Wood in June 1918. Jesse was killed in action the next month on July 19, 1918.
