Albert Ball as a young child

Albert Ball was born in Huntsville May 28, 1897, the second youngest of the eight children of Lewis Edwin and Irene Eleanor Rountree Ball. He received his early education in the Huntsville Public schools and went on enroll in Sam Houston Normal Institute where he excelled in athletics. After the United States entered World War I in 1917 Ball enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and was sent to France as part of the American Expeditionary Force. Ball was wounded in action at Belleau Wood in June 1918 and spent the next year recovering from his wounds before being discharged in 1919.
