"In Memoriam" in Death of Thomas Gibbs, 1872. Thomas Gibbs was born in Union District, South Carolina in 1812. He and his business partner, Gardner R. Coffin, first arrived in Huntsville in 1841 and shortly thereafter established one of the first mercantile stores in the young, growing town. Coffin died in 1843 and in 1847 Thomas invited Sandford, his youngest brother, to join him in partnership with the store. The Gibbs Brothers Store was one of the most successful mercantile establishments in the Huntsville/Walker County area and counted Sam Houston and his family as one their regular customers.
